Wailua
River is a long, slowly meandering river that starts at the
Wai'ale'ale
Crater and is fed by several tributaries on the way to the ocean.
This is the only navigable river in all
of Hawaii.
For
a remarkable Hawaiian adventure, we will cruise up the
Wailua
River
on the most popular river trip to the sacred Fern Grotto, a lava
rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. On the way to the Fern
Grotto, you will encounter numerous photo opportunities of the
tropical grasslands lining the river and Manu Kapu,
the Forbidden
Mountain, a legendary peak
that overlooks the south bank of the Wailua
River.
The Fern Grotto is located at its base. The landmark rock marks the
north end of the Kalepa Mountain
range.
At
the grotto, you will be serenaded by Hawaiian musicians playing
traditional, local songs including the Hawaiian Wedding Song as
you’ve never heard it before. The acoustics within this natural
amphitheater are fantastic and greatly enhance the singing and
guitar accompaniment. The trip up this historic and sacred river
takes about 40 minutes via a long flat bottom
riverboat.
